Onions: not really our thang.

So, our garden has grown and grown! We are quite proud of this lovely little area of our backyard. The girls have taken great pride in watering and caring for their plants. It has been a fun learning experience. This weekend, we did a little research on our onions and decided they were ready for picking, so we took the plunge and decided to pull one from the ground. Here's how it went.....
Uh-oh.

Where's the onion?

Nothin, nada, zilch.

So, yeah, not too good. We all walked back inside the house very bewildered by the experience. Basically, Ella pulled out the top and there was no onion attached to the bottom. We dug around and nothin. We pulled out another to make sure the first wasn't a dud and that one was the same! They were yellow onion bulbs that we planted, but they just look like chives. We are still confused. Any vegetable gardening experts out there that know what happened? Did we try to harvest the onions too early? Are these actually green onions(chives)?Did an animal come and eat them? What did we do wrong?! We need answers!!! So, other than the onions, the rest of the garden is flourishing. Here are other pictures of our growing veggies and herbs. . .

One of Joey's pepper plants
Aubrey looking through the strawberry plants. These did great! We probably picked at least 15 in the past few weeks. They were oh so juicy and yummy.

The tomatoes are getting there!

The top of a carrot plant. Grow carrots grow!

So, all in all, the garden is growing. But those onions are using trickery. And we don't like it at all.

I can't get the picture to enlarge, but by the looks of it you DO have green onions there (chives). I love them, hope you didn't throw them away.

mom, thanks! the song was actually already on my playlist. a few months ago, i read on another blog about the singer matt costa. so i searched songs by him one day and i found that i love his music. so, i have a couple of his songs on my playlist and for this post i thought it was perfect because of ella's little "pitiful" face:)

my votes with the green onions too!! he-he We have a similar garden in the backyard. Even though we planted the darn thing, we sometimes can't decide what is coming up & growing until it becomes really obvious--oh!! well!! Looks like those carrots are almost ready to pick. :)

I LOVE the face on Ella in those pictures. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your little onion harvest! They do look like green onions from the picture of Ella holding the "onion" in her hand. Since you still have it, eat it and let us all know what it tastes like. :)

I already did a comment, but when I pushed the buttom to publish it, it had an error. HOW RUDE!?!? I think it's the widget comment counter thing, I swear it has something against me. Anyways...my comment said something about how great your garden looks and something about liking green onions better anyways and maybe your garden prefers green onions too. Or maybe it's a magic garden that changes one seed into a different plant. That could be fun. :)

I believe they are green onions and the packaging was wrong. Hey, maybe you can let the company know and you guys will get more seeds for free Yeah, send them pictures and everything like disappointed faces. Too much right? Just a thought. Anyway, you can use it in cooking too like with chop steak, pancit or when you make finadeni it's real good. I love the pictures of the girls too cute. And yes, they are very serious gardeners and very responsible too. Too cute. Good job Ella and Aubrey. Miss you, love you.

Oh yeah I also meant to say at least you'll be able to trust the tomatoes you are growing and they won't be outrageously priced because of gas prices!
