A fun FHE!

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we practice something called, Family Home Evening(or FHE as its sometimes called). We have been asked by leaders of the church to reserve one night a week specifically for family activites and a lesson. Most families do Monday nights. Sunday nights work best for us. But whatever night you pick, nothing else should get in the way of having it. The activities range from anything like, learning a bible story, writing in journals together, planting a garden, going out to dinner, crafts, going on a family walk, whatever! Its good to incorporate a lesson of some kind, but you don't always have to, it can just be family fun! I think you can do with it what you want as long as you do it and are consistent. And if you do it, you are promised blessings! I already know that making sure we have our FHE has blessed our family tremendously and I'm grateful for a prophet who has asked us to do this. Our kids really look forward to it and though I have to admit there are weeks we miss(oopsie), I have a goal to make sure we don't miss a single week this year. It brings us closer together, creates lasting memories, gives us opportunities to teach our children, and also it teaches us as the parents. The kids seem to open up more on these nights and we learn so much from them.

Last year we started our first annual Family Olympics. It was so fun we've decided to do it again this year (and hopefully every year!) We start out with prayer/song/lesson(we talked about health and taking care of our bodies, how important and special our bodies that God gave us are, etc) This led into exercise and we talked about the importance of exercise. Then, the games began! I found on playlist.com, the "Olympics Theme" and played it from the laptop. The kids marched around the room while Joey announced their names, they loved that:) Then we had them compete in different events: discus throw(paper plates), jumping on one foot contest, obstacle course, shotput(with cotton balls), long jump, etc. We ended with an awards ceremony. I saw these little plastic trophies at the dollar spot at Target and surprised them at the end. They thought it was pretty cool! Here are the girls at the awards ceremony...

The champions
Silly, silly champions
Mormon or not, FHE rocks y'all. I totally recommend family night to everyone!

What a great idea! FHE is the best. A great time to have fun, and grow together as a family. You always have such great ideas.

What fun. FHE really does rock. This sounds like a really fun FHE.

Sometimes FHE seemed like a lot of work and I didn't get the reactions I expected. Sometimes it seemed like an up hill battle especially as the kids got older and had busy schedules.... However, FHE was a blessing to our family. I think that all those FHEs are part of the reason our kids turned out so good. I didn't think they were making much of a point to the kids at the time...but they did.

I am thankful that we had FHE in our home as we raised our kids. It paid off. Keep up the good work.

Hugs, Lura

Some of my happiest memories of times spent with my children are the Family Home Evenings we spent together before my marriage split up and my ex threw in his poison pen. I hope that somewhere in my children's minds they still exist and that they have fond memories of them as well, and who knows one day it might trigger something. I loved your idea of the FHE olympics. How wonderful! You and Joey are great parents. I love you guys to bits! xxoo

I love this idea its a great one. I'm glad you are setting aside this time to spend with the kids and each other everyone grows so fast and before you know it they have families of their own. So good to see that these influences will be long lasting. I love the expressions and I think Ella is the most serious and I love the podiums. Great great idea. Oh yes, and CONGRATULATIONS!!! TO THE OLYMPIANS OF 2010.

I'm guessing Ella was the big winner??? :) But of course, they're all winners, right!?! Looks like you guys had a good night together. And how did the cotton shot put go? I don't think I could throw a cottonball very far. :/
