Gotta catch those thieves...

It seems I've written a lot of bird-related posts lately. For that, I apologize. But I can't resist posting about this because it is so funny. Zac's dog food is outside and we've noticed a few bird thieves(blue jays, cardinals, and these ugly gray birds that I don't know the name of). They keep eating his dang food! And its making me mad. Anyways, a week or so ago, Joey decided it would be "fun" to try and catch one. Ya know, teach em a lesson. So, he set up a trap(And he told me this works. How does he know? From experience as a young mischievous boy:) Here is the trap....a laundry basket, a sack of potatoes, a stick and a rope. The rope led into our house for Joey to pull when he saw a bird go under the basket to steal the bait(dog food).
Here is Aubrey watching intently. The girls watched through the windows for HOURS that Sunday. It was so exciting to them:) Heck, I was excited too. We even made up a secret code. The girls were supposed to say, "Caw, caw!" when they saw a bird land on the porch. It was hilarious. We were all laughing, especially when one of the times Joey had fallen asleep on the couch and Aubrey shouted the "code." You should've seen that half-awake man scramble to his rope. LOL.

Here is a disappointed Ella after a near-catch. 3 times we almost got the gray sucker, but he was too fast. We never caught a bird that day..... but Joey told the girls they'd try again another day. And they can't wait for that day.

DISCLAIMER: No birds were harmed in the making of this blog post. There was no intention of harming any birds. We only want to scare the living daylights outta them. And of course, we wanted to watch them as they tried to escape while we laughed. And after we had that good laugh, we would release them. And then talk about it and laugh some more.

LOL! That was so fun. I PROMISE it works. I speak from experience. We caught a bunch of squirrels and blue jays in Yosemite back in the day. I can't wait to catch something here. It's awesome! :)

That's my boy McGiver Jr., if you need some kind of trap or camptraption (sp) he'll getter done for ya!!! I love the intesity of it all. I'd love to do that to these dang greckles down here they are not nice at all they are darn right mean and they steal food too. I've seen them not only pick the dog food but dip it in water to soften it a little then take off with it yeah perhaps a bbbb gun hmmmm. I don't do the dog food outside anymore mostly because Leilani is indoors but when we had a dog outside we discovered we were also feeding other varments if you get my drift. Good job McGiver I mean Joey. And good job girls on being on the alert dang grey birds. Sorry Zach ..................

Oh, you do know how to have the best times! One of our neighbors back in the day was intent on trapping some of the skunks that were plaguing out neighborhood. He set a trap similar to that. Skunks are nocturnal though, so it was meant to be sprung in the middle of the night. Each morning he would be out there checking it, rifle in hand. A bunch of the old guys decided to play a joke on him one night and put a stuffed teddy bear in the trap and sprung it. Laughs all around when he filled it full of buckshot! we still giggle over it. Poor teddy bear.

How funny. I think they did something like that on "Little House on the Prairie" back in the day.
